About the city

The City of Frydek-Mistek lies within the middle reaches of the Ostravice river where the Moravka river flows into it. Nowadays there are almost 60 000 inhabitants. City parts Chlebovice, Zelinkovice, Lysuvky, Liskovec and Skalice belong to the city. Total area of the town is about 5 161 ha.

Frydek-Mistek comprises of two original cities – Moravian Mistek from 13th century and Silesian Frydek, first mentioned in writing in the 14th century. Both towns were united in 1943 and today’s name Frydek-Mistek has been used since 1955. It became a statutory city on July 1, 2006.

Both historical centres have been rebuilt so today you can admire beatiful facades of originally Renaissance houses on Zamecke namesti (Castle Square) in Frydek and burgher houses with archway on namesti Svobody (Freedom Square) in Mistek.

A sought – after place is also the Castle of Frydek, originally a Gothic castle with the heart from the first half of 14th century, later adapted. Nowadays the Museum of Beskydy is settled there and it offers two expositions for tours – a castle tour and an extensive exposition of the Beskydy mountains and Beskydy region, documenting the history and culture of Beskydy area. Nowadays people can go for cultural events not only to the museum, to Narodni dum (National Hall), but also to a multifunctional facility called Vlast. From the historical point of view also some churches are worth mentioning, for example the Church of St. Josta, Church of St. John and Paul, the Church of All Saints, vicarage church of St. John the Baptist.

The city has a good sporting background for both active sportsmen and for those who like to do sports only for recreation. It’s possible to go in for yachting, surfing and fishing at the nearby artificial lake Olesna. Great temptation in this complex is a relaxation indoor and outdoor aquapark with the charming overview of the Beskydy panorama.

In-line skates can be used at the stadium of TJ Slezan or along the Ostravice river. A multi-purpose sport hall offers skating for public from autumn to spring and other activities. Even volleyball and tennist players won’t miss their opportunity. There is also a training wall for climbers. Ice-hockey, extraleague of men’s handball and women’s volleyball extraleague are played in Frydek-Mistek. In the nearby Palkovice you can practise skiing on a ski slope. You can also use interesting city cycling routes or set out for sightseeing or sports around city and its charming surrounding. If you do not belong to bicycle supporters you can set out for a journey by walk or by car. You will find peace and quiet in many city parks, you can relax and find enlightment on the 3.5 km long natural educational trail in the Frydek forest.
