Partner cities

Partner cities are cities which despite their geographical distance and political differences came together to foster mutual cultural ties and contacts between their citizens. They often (though not always) have similar demographic and other characteristics, sometimes a similar history. Such partnerships often lead to student exchange programmes as well as economic and cultural cooperation.

Practices of the partner cities arose in Europe after the World War II as a way to get people closer to mutual understanding and also as a way to support cross-border contacts. This concept is still the most popular in Europe, but over time it spread to other continents, which lead to some very interesting partnerships.

Partner cities festival

The festival of partner cities in Frýdek-Místek took place from 2016 to 2019. In 2020, its organization was thwarted by the global pandemic Covid-19 and has not yet been resumed.

Frýdek-Místek organized it for its citizens (and not only for them) to get acquainted with the culture, traditions of friendly cities with which Frýdek-Místek maintains friendly relations. At this multi-genre festival, which has always offered a varied cultural program for adults and children, visitors could also enjoy a rich snack and see the stands of the partner cities with information materials.

Simultaneously with the introduction of the partner cities, personalities who have made a significant contribution to the life of Frýdek-Místek have been or are still making a significant contribution to the mayor of the city every year.
